Adventures of our ODG (old dutch grandma) neighbour...

Our elderly neighbour lady likes to walk into our house whenever she wants. No really, she doesn't a key or anything but when we meet at the lift landing on our floor (there are only 3 other apartments on our floor) I always have this dreaded feeling like, here we go again....

Don't get me wrong, she's a sweet Old Dutch Grandma (let's call her ODG). Probably in her mid-80s, living alone with her husband also in his 80s. It's pretty cool to see 2 old people just doing their thing. People always say, don't smoke you will die sooner, but nope this rule doesn't apply to these 2 oldies coz they smoke like CRAZY in their apartment. It's so bad that whenever they open their door, the smell of smoke just hits you and the stank just hangs around the lift landing. Yuck.

Anyway, ODG is also kinda deaf so i have to face her and speak (dutch) slowly. Even then I think she probably doesn't understand 50% of what i say. ODG and her husband are a cute couple thought, they would take (slow) walks using their walker and when i was pregnant they would offer to buy something from the grocery store / market for me. Like, how sweet is that?!

Coupla days ago I came back home from Crossfit and I saw ODG outside her door. I said the usual "hello, how are you mevrouw [madam]... blah blah... Have a good weekend," then started to open our front door. Then she said,  "oeh, laat me de kleine even zien" [oooh, let me see the little one]. I said something like, oh, he's probably sleeping, or oh, it's not a good time right now, the house is so messy.  But nope, ODG is not having any of that. Either she didn't hear me, didn't want to hear me or basically just didn't care, she wanted to see my kid anyway.

Then she proceeded to walk slowly towards our front door, wanting to go in. I kind of stopped her but she peeked in anyway and said "geeft niet, ik wil zijn kleine koppie even zien" [it's ok, i just want to peek at his little head]. This time Nox was getting a shower from Jürgen and the bathroom door was open. So ODG could see him getting showered from our front door, which i guess made her happy as she went off on her way.

I just had to roll my eyes at Jürgen and laugh haha. This has happened 2-3 times before as well, the very first time was when i had just given birth and was wearing nothing but a loose singlet (no bra) and tiny shorts (it was summertime and hot!!). Since then this ODG basically will just walk into our house whenever she wants really.

Ah well, at least we have a sweet ODG on our floor and not a racist ODG. That grumpy old lady is on the ground floor... but that's another blogpost for another day ;)

Baby-friendly Banana & Date Muffin

We always have bananas at home. ALWAYS. It's the perfect snack during the day especially before and post workout. Also, bananas with almond/peanut butter on top?? YUMMY. When we have too many ripe bananas though, i like to cut them up and freeze them for a smoothie later in the week. Earlier this week i had one measly overripe banana and lots of dates leftover so i decided to whip up a banana-date muffin. A quick google search gave me recipes where i didn't have all the ingredients on hand at home, so i came up with something on my own. And guess what, it turned out awesome! Ingredients: 1 ripe banana 10 dates, pitted 2 eggs 5 tbs plain flour pinch of baking soda pinch of cinnamon

So my son will speak Dutch, Malay, English & Surinamese... ????!!!

The first language in Singapore is English. It's the medium of instruction in schools and even though we can sound funny with our Singlish (Singapore-English) accents, we speak English well enough as the next Brit or American. (You cannot believe the number of times I've rolled my eyes at someone who commented, "Oh you're from Singapore? But your English is sooo good !") *rolls eyes. again* I basically grew up bilingual, speaking English & my mother tongue Malay. It wasn't a 50-50 thing, it was more like 90-10. My Malay was (is??) terrible. I just spoke it at home with my mom and grandma and that was it. Anyone who knows me can vouch as to how bad my Malay was, i was barely passing my Malay language classes and i was just uninterested in it. Since moving to Holland in 2008 i picked up Dutch (pretty quickly too i think), and now speak it relatively fluently. My husband on the other hand is effectively bilingual, speaking Dutch and English (almost perfec...

Chronicles of a lawyer turned entrepreneur turned obsessed-with-her-son mommy

I've been wanting to start a blog for awhile now since Lennox was born in June 2015... He's almost 11 months old now and finally... here it is! I was hung up on the blog name, how to get readers/followers, how to monetize the blog, etc etc... then i realised, Hey, i'm doing this for ME! Who cares if anyone (or nobody) reads this?? Since i was young i've always kept (hand-written) journals... I still have those cringe-worthy diaries/journals with the sickeningly sweet smells, and even up to 2008/2009 when i moved to Holland I had kept journalling... Then i moved to the online world and kept a online journal on the Day One app, which is pretty handy and comprehensive actually... (hmm maybe i should start with that again).. BUT!!! Since I have a (new) son, why not start a new blog documenting our time together. I already overshare pictures of him on my social media anyway (so says my hubs)... so why not make it official with a blog ;) Nox & I in October 20...
